SUSHI- what’s the deal?
Whenever you talk to an expecting mom about their first meal post birth it’s often they say A HUGE SUSHI DINNER. Welllllll there isn’t actually a reason to not have sushi during your whole pregnancy. It is actually completely dependent on lots of other things.
Let's dive right into it. We've all heard the horror stories: raw fish can harbor harmful bacteria and parasites that could harm the baby. But hold your cravings, because it's not all doom and gloom. Let’s look at the research. For lots of stuff, especially the “tabu” we look to Emily Oster. Emily Oster is someone we LOVE - she is truly the pregnancy myth-busting guru. In her research-packed book, "Expecting Better," she offers some reassuring insights. Oster explains that the risks associated with sushi, particularly when it comes to mercury levels in fish, might not be as dire as we've been led to believe.
Sure, some types of fish, like king mackerel and swordfish, are high in mercury and should be avoided. But many of the fish commonly used in sushi, like salmon and shrimp, are lower in mercury and can be safely consumed in moderation.
But what about the raw factor? Oster sheds light on this too. She argues that in countries like Japan, where sushi consumption is high, there isn't a significant increase in adverse pregnancy outcomes compared to countries with lower sushi consumption rates.
That being said, it's essential to exercise caution. Getting your sushi from 7/11 or most grocery stores is usually a NO NO. However, sushi prepared in reputable establishments with high hygiene standards is generally safe. If you want to be EXTRA careful, opting for seared, cooked or vegetarian options can also reduce any potential risks.
Ultimately, it's about balance and informed decision-making. As Oster emphasizes, pregnancy isn't a time to live in fear or deprivation. It's about making choices that prioritize both our health and our enjoyment.
So, dear sushi-loving mama-to-be, while we may need to forgo certain indulgences during pregnancy, sushi doesn't necessarily have to be one of them. Just remember to choose wisely, listen to your body, and savor every bite responsibly.
As ALWAYS if you are questioning this or ANYthing else talk to your doc. Here's to happy, healthy pregnancies, and possibly some good sushi meals along the way!
